But Homeland delves deep – into Carrie’s troubled personality and her combustible chemistry with Nicholas Brody, the Marines former POW she suspects of being an al Qaeda sleeper agent, and with her CIA mentor Saul Berenson.

“We realized that there was so much to talk about,” Gordon said. “So we created the character of Carrie Mathison and we realised that this was in some way a love story.”

Nor is the clock run on 24. A film version is in the works, with Gordon and studio 20th Century Fox producing, though its original start date last month was postponed in a budget spat.

“I think everyone would like to make it. It’s really about everything falling into place. We are still talking now about doing it exactly this time next year,” he said.

In a hint of the pressures facing the leaders, Obama greeted German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Camp David and asked her how she was. Merkel, facing resistance over her austerity push, shrugged.

“Well, you have a few things on your mind,” Obama said.

A central economic topic, though hardly the only one confronting Europe, is the fate of Greece. That country is facing the most acute financial crisis of the eurozone and is set to hold elections June 17 to end political deadlock. At issue is whether Greece abandons the euro to escape austerity measures.

Hollande, after meeting with Obama at the White House, said, “We share the same views, the fact that Greece must stay in the eurozone and that all of us must do what we can to that effect.”

Also on the agenda is energy as the world looks to the oil markets in advance of fresh penalties set to take effect on Iranian oil exports. While oil prices have been falling, major oil importing countries, including the U.S., are keeping a wary eye on prices and keeping open the possibility of tapping their own oil reserves.

For Obama, Europe’s fate is critical to his own political survival. An economic recession that spreads to the U.S. could damage an already slow recovery and boost the argument by his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, that the United States economy needs new leadership.

The emphasis on economic growth has been welcomed by Obama, who has argued that the stimulus steps he took in 2009 put the U.S. on the road to recovery.

“Europe is still in a difficult state,” Obama told donors in Seattle last week, “partly because they didn’t take some of the decisive steps that we took early on in this recession.”

To what degree the Europeans, and Merkel in particular, agree remains to be seen.

“With Hollande coming into play here, there is going to be a lot of pressure on Germany, not just from Hollande and Obama, but also some of the other countries ? Italy and UK ? some pressure for Germany to push more toward growth within Europe because they have to get them on board,” said Jeffrey Bergstrand, a former federal reserve economist and now an expert on international finance at the University of Notre Dame.

U.S. officials have been encouraged by recent discussions in Europe to ease up some belt-tightening so that spending cuts aren’t as deep or as swift and to increase spending on public works projects like roads and schools in weaker parts of Europe. They also point to Germany‘s recent decision to negotiate higher public sector wages, a move they say could have a positive ripple effect on demand.

Merkel herself has made conciliatory gestures, saying in a television interview this week that she was open to helping stimulate the Greek economy provided Greece honored pledges to shrink its debt.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Scores of Christian youths in the Philippines chanted “Stop the Lady Gaga concerts” at a rally Friday calling for the pop diva’s shows here to be canceled despite assurances from authorities that they won’t allow nudity and lewd acts.

Sold-out crowds and angry protests followed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” Asian tour. Fans younger than 18 were banned from the Seoul concerts over complaints her lyrics and costumes were too sexually provocative, and she was denied a concert permit in Indonesia by police under pressure from Islamic hard-liners.

About 70 members of a group called Biblemode Youth Philippines rallied in front of the Pasay City Hall in metropolitan Manila. They said they were offended by Lady Gaga’s music and videos, in particular her song “Judas,” which they say mocks Jesus Christ.

Lady Gaga has secured papers for two concerts Monday and Tuesday, but Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto said he told organizers to ensure that “they follow the rules and regulations stipulated in the concert permit earlier provided by the city government.”

“Although we respect artistic and musical expressions, I won’t allow anyone or any group to provide acts which may be questionable in a way at any venue under my jurisdiction,” he said in a statement. “We reminded the producers of Lady Gaga’s concert that the show and the event as a whole shall not exhibit any nudity or lewd conduct which may be offensive to morals and good customs.”

Protest leader and former Philippine Congressman Benny Abante says his group plans to file a case against Lady Gaga and concert organizers if she sings “Judas” at her Manila gigs.

Organizers from Ovation Productions did not immediately provide details about the upcoming concerts, including whether Lady Gaga will perform “Judas.”

Former Manila Mayor Jose Atienza said the singer and organizers can be punished for offending race or religion. Under the penal code in the conservative, majority Roman Catholic country, the penalty can range from six months to six years in prison, although no one has been convicted recently.

Atienza and a prominent lawyer, Romulo Macalintal, met earlier Friday with Calixto to press their concern about the concerts, which will be held at the newly constructed seaside Mall of Asia arena with a seating capacity of 20,000.

The Rev. Reyzel Cayanan from Biblemode Youth Philippines said he will lead another protest march and a candlelight vigil Saturday near the concert venue.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? David Beckham just wants two things: the flame to burn right and a spot on Britain’s Olympic team.

The former England national team captain and current star for the Los Angeles Galaxy will light a cauldron at a ceremony Friday when the flame arrives in southwestern England from Greece on the eve of a 70-day torch relay for the 2012 London Olympics.

“I hope it lights,” he said with a chuckle.

Beckham, Princess Anne, London organizing chairman Sebastian Coe are escorting the flame, a symbol of peace and unity that harkens back to the origins of the games in ancient Greece. The 37-year-old star is excited about the chance to welcome the world to his “hood.”

Beckham been involved in the London Games since the organizing committee launched its successful bid in 2005. His star power ? the kind that sends children into shrieks of hysteria and diplomats’ wives in Athens into paparazzi ? is part of the reason that the International Olympic committee took notice of the London bid over Paris, the favorite.

While Beckham the celebrity isn’t shirking the attention the Olympic torch brings, Beckham the athlete really, really wants to take part on the field.

“I’ve never played in an Olympic Games,” he said. “Obviously, I’d love to.”

“I’ve always made it clear that I love representing my country,” he added. “I’ve done that quite a few times.”

He’s done that 115 times, to be precise, with the England team.

Beckham has been included in coach Stuart Pearce’s 80-man shortlist that will be whittled down to 18 players in the coming weeks to form Britain’s first Olympic soccer squad since 1960. If chosen, he would be one of the three players over age 23 allowed in each Olympic squad.

The flame, traveling on the gold-painted British Airways Flight 2012, will be carried off by Princess Anne, the head of the British Olympic Committee and herself a former Olympian. Beckham then will carry it to the cauldron, assuming it won’t be too windy.

No matter what, there will be a backup. On the plane itself, there are four flames just in case, all guarded by security.

All this might sound like a lot of attention for a bit of a fire, but London’s Olympic organizers are hoping that the flame’s arrival can generate excitement about the Games.

The torch will be carried all over the British Isles by 8,000 chosen volunteers, mostly local heroes. Its 8,000-mile (12,875-kilometer) journey will linger on the iconic sites ? Big Ben, Stonehenge, the white cliffs of Dover ? and speed past less appealing areas. It ends up July 27 at Olympic Stadium in London.

Beckham is one of the bookies’ favorites to open the Olympics by lighting the cauldron in London ? and he told reporters while visiting an Athens school that he’d love the job. Other favorites include miler Roger Bannister, rower Steve Redgrave, Coe, Queen Elizabeth II or other members of Britain’s royal family.

But no word on that ? Coe says the decision hasn’t even been discussed yet. For the moment, Beckham’s just thrilled to light the cauldron at the navy base at Culdrose in Cornwall.

“Being here today just makes it all that real,” he said in Athens. “Being handed the torch is the start of the games.”

I am a light-hearted guy ? and, as many of the people closest to me put it, a ?knucklehead.? So, I find the generally serious, aggressive tone that looms over many relationships ? whether discussing their basics or specifics ? to be overkill. And a little dangerous.

There are some aspects of marriage that many people consider ?too sacred? to even discuss or negotiate ? such as monogamy. And while I appreciate the romantic sentiment at work here, self-censorship undermines the importance of communication in human relationships. Many of us are raised to think that certain topics, such as money, religion, and politics, should be off limits ? for the sake of politeness or keeping the peace. But if we never discuss them, we limit our opportunities for learning, growth and/or understanding.

Speaking freely can be important in relationships, and agreeing that nothing is too sacred to discuss can save you lots of heartache and confusion down the road. Without conversation and negotiation, assumptions may arise and linger. And assumptions can get us into trouble.

Sacred means ?reverently dedicated to some person, purpose or object.? Sure, there are certainly things I believe to be sacred ? including my family, my friendships and my quiet time. But I have learned that this reverence is mine and pretty much only mine. Strangers and even friends may not value any of these things. This value is determined and felt by me, but not by the world. To assume otherwise would only lead to disappointment.

Bottom line: You can make whatever you want to make sacred ? to you. But it gets tricky when others are involved. And because a relationship is an agreement between two people, it?s only as sacred as its participants make it. People change and, therefore, so do the players in agreements, often without your permission or consent.

Is your relationship or some aspect of it too sacred to discuss? Perhaps it would hurt too much if the two of you were to analyze or change it? Or, maybe you had a discussion, considered the matter closed, and made it clear that you never want to revisit it. But if there is something you believe to be set in stone, remember this: Stone breaks. It is just the nature of working with someone else. An understanding of this is both flexible and Powerful.
